Other Names: Masked Lapwing.

Size: 38cm

Olive brown back; black crown, nape and shoulder patch; white underside. Distinctive yellow face wattle, beak and spurs on front of wing.

Self-introduced from Australia in the 1930s they have only been in the Auckland area since the 1990s.

Usually found in pairs feeding in grassed areas they will strut away if approached.

They will fly in small groups noisily calling to each other with a distinctive raucous cry.
